Fourth edition of the World Jurist Prize

Call for papers (CFP):

Navigating Uncertainty: Economic Resilience and National Security in International Economic Law in the Face of Global Challenges

The Faculties of Law of Universidad Externado de Colombia, the Universidade Federal de São Paulo, the Colombian Academy of International Law (ACCOLDI) and the Latin American Network of International Economic Law (RED LAT-DEI), as part of their efforts to promote critical and pluralistic thinking around the contemporary challenges of International Economic Law (IED), are pleased to present the 4th Edition of the Global Jurist Award, which invites the submission of academic papers for the academic event entitled: ‘Navigating Uncertainty: Economic Resilience and National Security in International Economic Law in the Face of Global Challenges’.

Growing geopolitical tensions, fragile supply chains, recurring financial crises, threats to health and the environment, and the accelerated digitalisation of the economy have highlighted the need to rethink the role of IED in contexts of uncertainty. In this scenario, economic resilience and national security concepts have become central to policymaking, giving rise to divergent interpretations, new normative tensions and institutional adjustments in advanced economies and emerging markets.

This call seeks to bring together contributions that, from different disciplinary perspectives, analyse the impact, limits, and transformations of international economic law in this new global environment. Papers that propose comparative approaches, case studies, or theoretical or empirical developments that explore these dynamics, as well as possible paths for their future evolution, will be particularly valued.

Suggested topics

  • Conceptualising economic resilience in the context of FDI.
  • National security and economic interdependence: emerging normative tensions.
  • The role of the state in economic protection and international regulation.
  • Regulatory divergences between advanced economies and emerging markets.
  • Resilience of supply chains and trade agreements.
  • Protecting strategic industries and analysing foreign investment.
  • Digital trade governance and cross-border data flows.
  • Capital controls and financial stability in crisis contexts.
  • Sovereign debt restructuring mechanisms.
  • Technology transfer and strategic autonomy.
  • The role of international institutions (WTO, IMF, World Bank).
  • Regionalism, integration and collective resistance strategies.
  • Economic security and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Geopolitics, fragmentation of the economic order and FDIs.

We also welcome proposals on other topics related to economic resilience, national security and their interaction with international economic law.

In assessing applications, we will prioritise essays that offer insightful analysis from a Latin American perspective. The selection criteria will include, but not be limited to:

·         Relevance: The extent to which the essay addresses critical issues and challenges relevant to International Economic Law, focusing on Latin American contexts and interests.

·         Originality: The originality and innovation of the ideas presented, especially those that bring new perspectives to the field.

·         Clarity and coherence: The clarity and coherence of the arguments presented, as well as the organisation and structure of the essay.

·         Methodological rigour: Use of sound research methodologies and analytical approaches to substantiate the claims and conclusions presented in the essay.

·         Contribution to academia: The essay has the potential to significantly contribute to the academic literature on international economic law, especially in relation to Latin American studies.

·         Practical implications: The practical implications of the conclusions or recommendations proposed in the essay for policymakers, practitioners and other stakeholders in the field.

We encourage authors to consider these criteria when preparing their work carefully and to ensure that their essays reflect a nuanced understanding of the complexities and nuances of international economic law from a Latin American perspective.

The finalists for the fourth edition of the World Jurist Prize will be announced on 30 October 2025.
