Third Edition of the Global Jurist Award

Call for Papers (CfP):

Geoeconomics, Trade and Investment: What role for Latin American countries?

The Law Faculties of Universidad Externado (Colombia) and the Federal University of São Paulo, along with the Latin American Network of International Economic Law (Red LATDEI), with the support of the World Trade Institute at the University of Bern, are pleased to present the 3rd Edition of the Global Jurist Award under the title Geoeconomics, Trade, and Investment: What Role for Latin American Countries?

Previous editions have demonstrated the academic community's and practitioners' growing interest in deeply reflecting on relevant topics of international economic law and their future implications. In the 2020 and 2021 calls for papers, we received submissions from different parts of the world, highlighting the importance of maintaining a forum of this nature that allows for the convergence of various legal perspectives, with particular emphasis on our region and the global South.

Context:

The reality post-pandemic is less hopeful than initially thought. The emergence of new conflicts threatening peace and the international order, particularly concerning transnational economic relations, has translated into persistent crises that deeply affect citizens. Likewise, the ongoing crisis of globalisation demonstrates that the current system has failed to provide solutions to challenges threatening humanity, such as the climate emergency.

Once characterised by multilateralism and cooperation, the global order shifts toward power dynamics, leading to renewed geopolitical concepts and heightened national security concerns. Countries are forming alliances to mitigate risks and enhance the autonomy and resilience of production chains. Additionally, nearshoring and friend-shoring strategies influence commercial partnerships.

Objective:

The 3rd edition of the Global Jurist Award seeks to receive papers contributing to developing International Economic Law (IEL) and exploring its response to current world dynamics. With a temporal perspective spanning a decade, the award aims to acknowledge authors providing precise assessments of the current institutional status of IEL and offering compelling proposals on the role of Latin American countries in this new geopolitical landscape.

Relevant Topics:

·         Redefining the global order and its impacts on International Economic Law.

·         The role of IEL in promoting sustainable and inclusive development in Latin America.

·         The influence of new technologies on international trade and production chains.

·         Regulation of foreign direct investment in the context of geopolitics.

·         Nearshoring and friendshoring in international trade.

·         Resolving international trade disputes amid geopolitical shifts.

·         The Future of International Economic Law in a multipolar world.
